Description

Folios 161-162: Edmund Dod, HMS Charon, Basse Terre Road, St Christopher. Reports his arrival at Barbados with HMS Charm and HMS Scorpion 4 May 1793 and found an order from Rear Admiral Gardner to remain with these two ships at Carlisle Bay. Copies of these Orders are enclosed. The first Order is to collect homeward bound trade on the several Islands and appointed Basse Terre Road St Christopher's as the general Rendeyvous, the others to proceed with them to the Downs. Advises that he has already given instructions to eighty four ships and vessels in the Roads. The Antigua ships have not been found but are expected in a day or two, under the Convoy of HMS Winchelsea. He has directed HMS Scorpion to Tortola on 10 June 1793 to collect the ships at that island, ready to join his convoy. He advises that the convoy will be 130 British ships and several Dutch ships from Berbue and Surinam. The 12 June 1793 is the appointed date of sail for the convoy and no later that two or three days after. HMS Centurion and HMS Rattlesnake are ordered by the Admiral to proceed with the convoy as far as latitude 23 degree North and then to return. HMS Winchelsea is to accompany as far as the Banks of Newfoundland, but has not yet arrived. Encloses a report on the state and condition of HMS Charon.

Folio 163: enclosure with folios 161-162. Rear Admiral Alan Gardner, HMS Queen, Carlisle Bay, Barbados to Captain Edmund Dod, HMS Charon, 1 May 1793. States he arrived at Carlisle Bay on 27 April 1793 with a squadron of His Majesty's Ships to take on the post of Commander in Chief of the Leeward Island Station. Orders that when he arrives the Bay in HMS Charon, he is to await further orders.

Folios 164-165: enclosure with folios 161-162. Rear Admiral Alan Gardner, HMS Queen, Carlisle Bay, Barbados to Captain Edmund Dod, HMS Charon, 22 May 1793. Orders by command of Rear Admiral George Grant, that he should proceed to the Downs, Great Britain with the trade from the Leeward Islands, appointed to sail from Basse Terre Road, St Christopher's as soon after 12 June 1793 as possible. On arrival at St Christopher's, he should assemble a convoy of all trade vessels of that Island that wish to travel with him, along with the ships that he has bought with him from Grenada. Any additional ships from the Leeward Islands and Dutch vessels may apply for protection. He should dispatch HMS Scorpion to Tortola to collect the ships that are bound up St George's Channel.

Folios 168-169: enclosure with folios 161-162. Rear Admiral Alan Gardner, HMS Queen, Carlisle Bay, Barbados to Captain Edmund Dod, HMS Charon, 22 May 1793. Duplicate copies of orders [see folios 164-165 and 166-167].

Folio 170: enclosure with folios 161-162. State and Condition report on HMS Charon in Basse Terre Road, St Christopher's on 12 June 1793. Lists compliment of seamen, marines, supernumeraries and officers as well as the stock of provisions on board.
