Description

Folios 604-605: John Davies, HMS Otter, Shields. Acknowledges order to discharge Jonathan Mason, John Harland and William Sanderson. The first two he has discharged as they have not been at sea before but he is retaining William Sanderson as he has served at sea and has no protection from the Experiment Greenland Ship.

Folios 606-607: enclosure with folios 604-605. Letter dated 6 July 1805 by Abel Chapman, Whitby to the Admiralty. Request for the discharge of a person impressed from HMS Experiment. This person is a minor and Ward of Chancery. Encloses a signed affidavit in support of this discharge.

Folio 608: enclosure with folios 604-605. Affidavit sworn before Richard Moorsom, Justice of the Peace for North Riding and York, Whitby by Thomas Barton, Master and Edward Lindsey, Mate of the Ship Experiment, 5 July 1805. Reports they arrived at Whitby from the Greenland Seas on 30 June 1804. The ship was then boarded by a boat from HMS Otter off Cocket Island [Coquet Island] Northumberland on her return from fishing. Lieutenant John Richardson impressed John Harland, Jonathan Mason and William Sanderson. States that Protection Certificates had been obtained from the Customs Office at Whitby for these men.
