Description

Folios 361-362: Manley Dixon, HMS Genereux, NE end of Majorca.

Reports that the Flora joined him from Mahon with letters from Robert William Halstead of HMS Phoenix and from Isaac Grant of Porto Ferraro describing the situation on Elba as Ganteaume's squadron is in front of it and French troops from Corsica have landed. Captain George Parker of HMS Santa Margarita will carry papers to England. He has information of a battle when Lord Thomas Cochrane on Folios HMS Speedy captured a Spanish boat full of men and took them to Mahon.

Folio 363: enclosed with folios 361-362. Isaac Grant, Porto Ferraro, 3 May 1801 writes to Manley Dixon to report the enemy vessels and that 600 men were landed from the Piombino. The governor had been told that if he received the French consul and garrison then no blood would be spilt providing that the English were ejected from the port but the offer was refused. States his belief that if the French are allowed to take Elba then English trade with Italy will be ended.

Folio 634: enclosed with folios 361-362. Isaac Grant, Porto Ferraro, 2 May 1801 writes to Manley Dixon that Robert Halstead had encountered enemy ships protecting disembarking troops from the Piombino. Other men had been landed at Marciana. He describes the movements of French ships in the area where only HMS Caroline and one other frigate are present. The governor of the island has agreed with local inhabitants that the island must be defended although ammunition is very limited.

Folio 365: enclosed with folios 361-362. Robert William Halstead, HMS Phoenix off Porto Ferraro, 2 May 1801 reports finding 7 large ships which did not answer to the private signal. He is to join HMS Caroline off Longone and reports French troops landed at Marciana.

Folio 366: enclosed with folios 361-362. Charles William Patterson, HMS San Fiorenzo, Mahon, 11 May 1801 writes to Manley Dixon referring to enclosed information received from a cartel. The French expect 4 months of hostilities between England and Denmark and the emporer of Russia is reported dead. recommend the master of the cutter Flora for bravely carrying correspondence.

Folio 367: enclosed with folios 361-362. Charles William Patterson, HMS San Fiorenzo, Mahon 10 May 1801 reports the arrival of Peter Toutro in the Apollo cartel who coming from Marseilles had been captured by the French off Cagliari, Sardinia, and taken to Toulon where he noted the French squadron and troop movements.

Folio 368: enclosed with folios 361-362. Isaac Grant, Port Ferraro, 4 May 1801 reports that the French general Thaurreau demanded the governor must cede the island or face death. The governor had responded that without orders from King Ferdinand III Grand Duke of Tuscany he would continue to oppose the French. It is expected that the French will begin to fire on the fortresses and he repeats his view that he cannot hold out for more than a month. French ships are cruising all around the area.
