Description

Folios 349-350: Manley Dixon, HMS Genereux, Port Mahon.

Letters carried by HMS Louisa order him to give every assistance in sending troops. Refers to various enclosures but does not feel able to send troops to Elba without specific orders. HMS Phoenix under Robert William Halstead arrived with a convoy on 1 July 1801.

Folios 351-352: enclosed with folios 349-350. Samuel James Ballard, HMS Pearl off Porto Ferraro, Elba 25 June 1801 writes to Dixon that not finding HMS Pomone off Toulon he sent Captain Robert Dudley of HMS Mermaid to Mahon to give information about most of the French squadron having sailed westward. The garrison at Porto Ferraro has been besieged by land and blockaded by sea but he landed marines and money and is to stay off Elba to protect the garrison. Asks for reinforcements as he intends to attack the French on the island. Reports having captured a Genoese and a Neapolitan boat while privateers have brought 9 vessels with cargo for the enemy.

Folios 353-356: enclosed with folios 349-350. Isaac Grant and Joseph Littledale, Port Ferraro, 25 June 1801 write to S J Ballard on HMS Pearl of their fear of losing Elba if the plan to sail HMS Pearl to Mahon is carried out. The local inhabitants have suffered greatly under 8 months of attacks and are relying on assistance from the English.

Folios 357-358: enclosed with folios 349-350. Charles de Fisson, Porto Ferraro, 24 June 1801 writes to Samuel Ballard asking him to remain at his station off Elba as it will allow vessels to enter and leave the port freely whereas otherwise the French blockade will return.
