Folios 299-300: Manley Dixon, HMS Genereux, Mahon Harbour.
Refers to an enclosed letter sent by the cutter Joseph with information from Lieutenant Simpson about the French squadron at Toulon. Also refers to an enclosed letter from Rear Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren after a chase of the French squadron. Refers to Mr Littledale's remarks on the island of Elba, another about shipping corn to England on board the Serapis, a copy of his orders to Captain Foote and other enclosures.
Folios 301-301a: enclosed with folios 299-300. Lieutenant General Fox, writes to Manley Dixon, commander HM ships Mahon, replying to an enclosed letter from Captain Halstead saying that he is not able to send troops from the island unless ordered to do so by England although certain emigrants under Major General Willotte might be available.
Folios 302-303: enclosed with folios 299-300. Lawrence William Halstead, HMS Phoenix, Port Ferraio, 31 March 1801 asks for English troops to be sent to protect it from the French by sharing duty with Tuscan troops.
Folios 304-305: enclosed with folios 302-303, enclosed with folios 299-300. Lawrence William Halstead, HMS Phoenix off Port Ferraio, 2 April 1801 reports Lieutenant General Fox , Mahon, that the governor of the port has repeatedly been threatened by the French general Murat and that he has therefore asked for English troops to be provided. He sends copies of the letters by Captain Robert Dudley Oliver of HMS Mermaid. Some 60 Austrian soldiers have volunteered to serve with the Tuscans but he stresses the need for urgent action.
Folio 306: enclosed with folios 299-300. Manley Dixon, HMS Genereux, Port Mahon, 6 April 1801 writes to Captain William Hoste of HMS Mutine ordering him to deliver dispatches to the commander in chief at Alexandria and keep a lookout for the squadron of Rear Admiral John Borlase Warren. Tells him to expect to see the enemy at the Barbary coast and near the Gulf of Sira. All dispatches should be weighted in case they need to be sunk.
Folio 307: enclosed with folios 299-300. Headed 'Intelligence Received' and signed by Captain William Bowen reports that on 6 April 1801 he boarded an American ship bound from Palermo to London carrying oil and liquorice. She had been boarded the previous day by HMS Mermaid and reported that Rear Admiral Warren's squadron had anchored off Palermo for a few hours on 9 March 1801. On 11 March 1801 two ships of the line were seen in Toulon apparently ready to sail, along with 5 frigates.
Folios 308-309: enclosed with folios 299-300. Manley Dixon, HMS Genereux, Port Mahon. The cutter Joseph Hind arrived with dispatches for Admiral Lord Keith and will proceed to Egypt. Captain William Hoste of HMS Mutine reported seeing a French squadron of 7 line of sail near Toulon. Refers to the enclosed letter from Lieutenant Simpson and has ordered the cutter HMS Joseph under Lieutenant Sapenotiere to take news of the French squadron to England. Refers to the enclosed letter from Rear Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren. Reports on the whereabouts of all the English ships under his command.
Folios 310-311: enclosed with folios 308-309, enclosed with folios 299-300. J Simpson, 13 March 1801, Hieres Bay arrives at Toulon 15th March 1801 where he finds the squadron of the French admiral Gauteaume and names around 15 vessels. Fever has infected the crews of French ships. Further entries follow for dates up to 2 April 1811.
Folios 312-313: enclosed with folios 299-300. Manley Dixon, HMS genereux, Port Mahon, 6 April 1801. Knowing there is a shortage of corn in England he has ordered Charles Duncan of HMS Serapis to take in as much as possible to take to home.
Folios 314-315: enclosed with folios 299-300. Rear Admiral John Borlase Warren, HMS Renown at sea off Mauritius, 27 March 1801 writes that he received information from the brig HMS Salamine about the French fleet leaving Toulon and had himself encountered it off the Isle of Toro having been re-enforced by HMS Alexander and HMS Athenian from Malta. He orders Manley Dixon to direct either HMS Minerva or HMS Mermaid to join him together with HMS Mercury and to keep frigates outside Toulon and also between Barcelona and Majorca.
