Description

Folios 295-296: Manley Dixon, HMS Genereux, Port Mahon. States that he has not received news of the movements of the Commander in Chief of the Levant since 22 February 1801 when the whole fleet and army were off Rhodes steering for Egypt. Captain Robert Barlow in HMS Phoebe with merchant ships left on 25 March 1801 and the cutter Joseph spoke to them off Cape Falcon on 29 March. Captain Edward James Foote in HMS Seahorse with store ships Chichester and Woolwich sailed on 29 March 1801 for Malta and Egypt.

Folios 297-298: enclosed with folios 295-296. Signed Manley Dixon and headed 'Mr Littledale's remarks on the island of Elba' says that Porto Ferraio has around 600 Tuscan troops. The income of the port is tiny and no supplies would be received from the government of Tuscany after the French entered that country but the King of Naples sent 6,000 ducats per month for maintenance although this ceased when an armistice was agreed. If the English were to leave the island it would probably fall to the French army. When HMS Caroline under Captain Bowen left with the prizes, French troops marched to Piombino but the Phoenix and Mermaid arrived to prevent them passing. The governor Colonel Fisson has been ordered to surrender 3 times but refuses to accept a French garrison. Littledale emphasises the need to reassure the local people and recommends keeping a frigate nearby. Further detail is given.
