Received information about the French squadron having sailed from Toulon on 19 March 1801 then on 26 March 1801 he encountered the squadron off Toro. Joined by HMS Alexander and HMS Athenian from Malta he chased the French all day but lost sight of them during the night. Orders that a frigate be sent to assist by sailing along the shore of Africa.
