Description

Folios 276-277: Manley Dixon, HMS Genereux, Port Mahon. Encloses a letter from Captain Robert Barlow of HMS Phoebe and praises the performance of the crew in the recent combat. Damage to HMS Phoebe will be repaired and she will then sail to England with a convoy.

Folios 278-279: enclosed with folios 276-277. Robert Barlow, HMS Phoebe at sea 20m leagues east of Gibraltar, 20 February 1801. Describes how he discovered an enemy ship under Ceuta sailing with others eastwards. At 7.30 in the evening he engaged them and a fierce battle raged for 2 hours before the French vessel L'Africaine was almost a wreck with hundreds dead and injured. L'Africaine was under the command of Commadore Saunier who was killed in the exchange and Captain Magendie was injured. Dixon gives details of the troops and artificers on board the French vessel and of the weaponry carried. He recommends Lieutenants Holland, Bedford and Heywood together with Lieutenant Weaver of the Marines, Mr Griffiths the master and all of the ship's crew. Gives details of dead and wounded.

Folio 280: enclosed with folios 276-277. Signed by Captain Magendie a list of the 200 killed and 143 wounded many of whom are all named and ranks given.

Folio 281: enclosed with folios 276-277. Robert Barlow, HMS Phoebe, Port Mahon 10 March 1801 refers to an enclosed letter to Admiral Lord Keith and orders from Admiral Lord Gardner but both are missing.
