Folios 246-247: John Dilkes, London. Responds to the letter of 10 December. Mr Mackinder does not appear to have received any bounty. He performed the duty of a Midshipman with great diligence when his health permitted, though he cannot be regarded as a professional seaman from the description of his family problems. Has no objection to his discharge.
Folios 248-249: enclosure with folios 246-247. Letter dated 7 December 1800 by Robert Stephenson Mackinder, Midshipman, HMS Madras. Request for discharge due to ill health and family issues. His father has died and his mother has no-one to manage her affairs. His friends are asking him to return, as he has no brother capable of giving her assistance. He once before was obliged to ask for a discharge when serving on HMS Caesar, Captain Roddam Home, but was required to find a substitute due to the state of his health, but returned as soon as he was able. He hopes this will be taken into consideration. Captain Dilkes has no objection.
