Folios 242-243: John Dilkes, HMS Madras, Chatham. Returns the 2 letters of [Mr] McCoy which he was sent; Vice Admiral Graeme has sent a similar one, which he answered. Mr McCoy came from HMS Zealand, where he had been a Supernumerary, with recommendations from Captain Parr. Captain Dilkes rated him as Corporal. He cannot now remember the circumstances, but he was convicted of purchasing watches stolen from the ship's crew for a small amount, with the promise of more, to make a profit in China, and other irregularities, and he was demoted. On arrival in England he wrote to request a Court Martial. Captain Dilkes refused, as he had punished him for his crime.
