Folios 238-239: John Dilkes, HMS Madras. Returns the enclosed letter, as the writer may wish to keep it. Mr Redhead has stated that he did not intend it for the Navy Board or the Admiralty, and Captain Dilkes believes him.
Folios 240-241: enclosure with folios 238-239. Letter dated 31 October 1800 by R Redhead, Chatham. Application for a warrant or discharge. He first embarked on HMS Madras 5 years ago as Gunners Mate, but before they sailed for the West Indies was placed as Boatswain's Yeoman; the Boatswain could scarcely write his own name and he kept the books and accounts. Part of the time in the West Indies he also acted as School Master to the boys. He received pay as an Able Seaman. After refitting at Chatham he acted as School Master and kept the Boatswain's storeroom. At the end of March 1879 Captain Dilkes took him on the books as School Master when they sailed for the East Indies. He had 5 young gentlemen at one table in the gun room and 18 boys between decks, besides others of the ship's company. He has taught navigation, reading and writing. On arrival at The Nore he was told by Lieutenant Palmer that he had been demoted by Captain Dilkes and would return to Boatswain's Yeoman. He does not know why and is very hard as he is now 58 years old, and incapable of heavy work. His eyesight is poor and he requires spectacles. Requests a warrant for either School Master or Gunner on any ship. Would be content to continue as long as he is capable, but would also be grateful for a discharge.
