Description

Folios 126-127: John Dilkes, HMS Madras, Blackstakes [Medway]. Report that being ready to proceed to the Nore, he had a Pilot on board the night before last, but the morning time for unmooring it being perfectly calm, he was forced to keep all fast; as he had doubts whether upon coming to anchor here we had not dropt foul of one of the Russian ships. Yesterday morning weighed that anchor (and found we had been quite clear of her) and upon mooring again perceived the second small Bower Cable, which never had been in the water before, to be very much cut, examining the Hawse hole and above water we could find nothing to occasion it; upon sweeping we found a catch about 15 feet under water abreast the fore hatchway which immediately brought to mind the circumstances of the day after the Ship was put of Dock we were extremely surprised to find she had made above three feet water and continued to make nearly the same for two or three days after. [Two plus sides on the inspection and repairs made].
