Description

Folios 109-110: Henry Digby, HMS Alcmene, Tagus. Covering letter for copies of three letters to the Earl St Vincent [Sir John Jervis (Viscount St Vincent)] for the information of the Admiralty.

Folios 111-112: enclosure with folios 109-110. Letter dated 2 August 1799 by Henry Digby, HMS Alcmene, to Earl St Vincent [Sir John Jervis (Viscount St Vincent)]. Reports the capture on the 1 July 1799 of the Les Deux Amie French Brig letter of Marque six guns and sixty men bound to St Domingo from France. [Folio 112] Letter dated 6 October 1799 by Henry Digby, HMS Alcmene, to Earl St Vincent [Sir John Jervis (Viscount St Vincent)]. Reports the capture off Cape Espichell on the 5 October 1799 an armed coasting boat, loaded with sundry Balegoods, without colours or papers, with ten men, supposed to be Portugese or Spanish and have sent them into the Tagus.

Folios 113-114: enclosure with folios 109-110. Letter dated 30 July 1799 by Henry Digby, HMS Alcmene, to Earl St Vincent [Sir John Jervis (Viscount St Vincent)]. Reports he stood into the Harbour of Vivere on 18 July 1799 towards sunset and running between two Spanish Vessels at anchor distant from each other near two Cables length. He sent Lieutenant Warren and Lieutenant Oliver with parties armed to board and make out, which service they executed in a spirited and masterly manner. On their appearance under sail, two Forts and a detached gun opened round on us which was returned, the heavy smoke of our guns and day closing prevented the enemy directing theirs to effect. One of the Prizes, a ship named La Felicidad between seven and eight hundred Tons and pierced for twenty guns loaded with Hemp, a few lower masts and ship timber, the other named El Bisarvou a Brig of near four hundred tons with ship timber and iron with eighteen men bound to the Arsenal at Ferrol. Is obliged to Mr Hammond commanding the Phoenix Privateer of Jersey for the intelligence. He followed in and gave every assistance to the prizes. On 25 July 1799 he sent him in chase and he captured a French Sloop from St Domingo bound to France.
