Description

Folios 557: John Erskine Douglas, HMS Boston, at sea off Havre. Receipt of request to send a list of hips in which Lieutenant Allen has served since his entry. He is sending copies of the certificates he has obtained and a copy of his passing certificate written by the Clerk of HMS Marlborough in Port Royal Harbour on the same day as his examination and passing. The original was forwarded to the Admiralty Office. Lieutenant Allen has been employed in foreign service during the present war until his appointment to HMS Boston which was his first Commission dated 12 January 1798. Refers to Mr Allen's letter for his different appointments by Commanders in Chief abroad.

Copies of 18 statements dated from 1 May 1778 to 11 November 1794 certifying the service of James Allen as Midshipman, Able Seaman and Master's mate on various ships, from Captains John Evans, Anthony Parrey, John Laforey, Samuel Cornish and Charles Saxton of HMS Invincible, Samuel Cornish of HMS Arrogant, John Wainwright of HMS Queen, Benjamin Caldwell of HMS Alcide, Charles Craven and John Bazely of HMS Marlborough, Robert Kingsmill of HMS Duke, Andrew Snape Hammond of HMS Bedford, Robert Linzee, John Woodley and Thomas Revell Shivers of HMS Alcide, Edward Cooke and William Shield of HMS Windsor Castle. True copies certified by John Erskine Douglas on board HMS Boston on 23 September 1798.
