Folios 550-551: John Erskine Douglas, HMS Boston, at sea in the Race of Alderney. He is sending a report of the condition of the ships cruising under his command and a journal of his proceedings from the time he parted company with Captain Barlow of HMS Phoebe. On reconnoitring the port of Cherbourg the enemy's flotilla seemed to be in the same state as details in his letter of 30 [July 1798]. Lieutenant Murray of HMS Safflower reports that there is a small convoy at St Maloes [Malo] bound for Brest which is expected to sail with the first favourable wind. He has ordered Captain Wray of HMS Seagull to cruise of St Maloes [Malo] with the purpose of intercepting them. Lieutenant Murray also says that a Fisherman informed him that there are 60 flats at St maloes [Malo] and that during his cruise he saw one or more flats with 2 guns in every creek along the coast to Granville.
