Folios 546-547: John Erskine Douglas, HMS Boston, Guernsey Roads. He is sending the state and condition of the ships and vessels under his orders for the protection of this and adjacent islands. When he reconnoitred Cherbourg port on 26 [July 1798] in the Road there was the guard ship, 5 brigs, 3 large schooners, 4 large luggers, 2 cutters, 13 gun boats and 28 sail. The same day 5 brigs, 3 schooners, 4 luggers and 2 cutters came out of the Road but did not trust themselves out of reach of gunshot of Fort Pelee and returned to their anchorage in about 2 hours. The port was in the same situation yesterday morning.
