Description

Folios 544-545: John Erskine Douglas, HMS Boston, Guernsey Roads. He is sending the state and condition of the ships and vessels under his orders for the protection of this and adjacent islands. He looked into Granville and St Maloes [Malo] between 13 and 17 [July 1798] . In Granville there was only one armed brig and 23 flat boats lying on the beach. In St Maloes [Malo] there was one corvette and 2 cutters lying in the Road. A great number of vessels were in the pier but it is impossible to give an accurate description of them. HMS Thetis lugger looked in to Cherbourg on 9 [July 1798] and only saw 24 gun boats beside the guard ship in the Road. He thought the best use of the gun brigs which were sent out for the protection of the islands was to moor them in different bays. he placed 3 of them in different bays in Jersey sa the Governor thought best and 2 in Guernsey. HMS Bouncer is stationed in St Helier's bay, HMS Spiteful in St Catherine's bay, and HMS Grappler in the bay of Bouille and Roselle. HMS Sparkler and HMS Staunch are stationed at Guernsey.
