Folios 538-539: John Erskine Douglas, HMS Boston, Spithead. he hopes Lieutenant Falconer's request to be superceded contained in the enclosed letter will be complied with. No Lieutenant has been appointed in lieu of Lieutenant Ellison. Asks for the appointment to HMS Juno of Lieutenants Jonathan Christian and Thomas Searle, both belonging to HMS Prince, and recommended to him by Rear Admiral Sir Roger Curtis who asks him to make this application.
Folios 540-541: enclosure with folios 538-539. Letter dated 11 January 1798 from Lieutenant George Falconer, HMS Boston, Spithead, to J E Douglas, Captain of HMS Boston. He has not had any leave since his appointment to see to his private concerns. requests to be superceded for 6 weeks or to retire on half pay during that time after which he will be happy to serve in any part of the world.
