Description

Folios 537-538: Andrew Farmery Evans, HMS Ruby. Reports Henry Coffin alias Walter McFarlane is imprisoned on board HMS Ruby following a court Martial. He had received 286 lashes and was admitted to the navel hospital before being removed to HMS Ruby for security. His surgeon has said that although his skin is healed he cannot bear the infliction of the remaining lashes this season. As HMS Maidstone is likely to be the last ship to leave th island he has transferred him to it so that he can be given a passage home. He was many months in irons before and after receiving the punishment and it will be some time before he can receive anymore and this is to be followed by two years of solitary confinement, he asked that they extend clemency.

Folios 539-540: enclosure with folios 537-538. Letter by Rear Admiral Pulteney Malcolm. President. Copy of sentence passed on Henry Coffin, alias Walter McFarlane, HMS Madagascar. Hearing took place on board HMS Royal Oak in the river Patascent on 21 September 1814. Sentenced to 500 lashes and two years solitary confinement in Marshalsea Prison for mutinous conduct and behaviour towards Lieutenant Lucius Curtis on 26 March 1814. Signed by Rear Admiral Pulteney Malcolm, Captain Alexander Skene, Captain John Martin Hanchett, Captain Edward Dix and George Alfred Crofton.
