Description

Folios 516-517: Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Bulwark, Spithead. Reports his arrival at Spithead on 2 August 1815 in HMS Bulwark, along with HMS Madagascar, HMS Charybdis, 39 sail of transports and 2 merchant ships. On board were 9 Regiments, 2 Companies of Royal Artillery, 289 officers and seamen, 96 Marines and some invalids from Quebec. Explains his reasons for leaving HMS Newcastle and HMS Calliope behind and for deviating from Rear Admiral Edward Griffith's orders to send HMS Calliope to Halifax, instead leaving her in Quebec. Encloses the orders and letters that passed during this service along with a list of convoy and a condition and defects report on HMS Bulwark.

Folios 519-520: enclosure with folios 516-517. Letter dated 4 July 181 by Admiral Edward Griffith, HMS Akbar, Halifax to Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Bulwark. Reports receiving an extract of a letter from Sir Sydney Beckwith, the Quartermaster General in Canada to Sir John Sherbrook, Lieutenant Governor, expressing his fears that the embarkation of troops will be delayed for want of shipping. He hopes these fears are groundless as several Transports have arrived since, including HMS Bulwark, HMS Newcastle and HMS Madagascar.

Folios 521-522: enclosure with folios 516-517. Letter dated 28 June 1815 by Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Bulwark, Quebec to Sir Edward William Campbell Rich Owen, Commander in Chief, Canada. Reports arriving at the Brandy Pots in HMS Bulwark on 19 June 1815, with orders from Rear Admiral Edward Griffith, Commander-in-Chief of the North American Station, to take charge of the Second Division of the Convoy with the troops to England. He passed Sir George Collier in HMS Leander with the First Division, having HMS Accasta and HMS Perseus and 53 Transports containing about 12,000 troops, Due to a shortage of water casks, he has ordered the coopers to produce as many as they can as soon as possible.

Folios 523-524: enclosure with folios 516-517. Letter dated 28 June 1815 by Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Bulwark, Quebec to Lord George Stuart, HMS Newcastle. Reports that the whole of the seamen from the Lakes and a small number of the army will not reach Quebec in time to join the convoy under HMS Bulwark. Advises he will leave HMS Newcastle under his command and HMS Calliope and orders that he give convoy to the remaining transports and troops from the Lakes to Spithead in pursuance of orders from Rear Admiral Griffith, Commander-in-Chief of the North American Station. Orders that Captain Dobbs, the resident Agent of Transports at Quebec give regular progress reports. Also orders that all coopers be engaged in making water casks as a matter of urgency due to a shortage. Throughout all these actions he should be communicated with Lieutenant General Sir Gordon Drummond.

Folios 525-526: enclosure with folios 516-517. Letter dated 28 June 1815, by Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Bulwark, Quebec to Lord George Stuart, HMS Newcastle. Reports troops and seamen arriving from the Lakes and orders that as many seamen as possible should be received on board HMS Newcastle and HMS Calliope. Also advices that if the coopers employed producing water casks for the Transports fall short of the number required, then the deficiency should be supplied from HMS Newcastle.

Folios 527-528: enclosure with folios 516-517. Letter dated 9 July 1815 by Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Bulwark, Gulf of St Lawrence to Admiral Edward Griffith, Halifax. Acknowledges receipt of his letter from Captain Henry Jane, HMS Arab. Reports arriving with Transports with 7000 troops to alleviate the difficulties experienced by Sir Sidney Beckwith, Quarter Master General. Also reports 700 soldiers are due to arrive from the Lakes with 150 soldiers. Lord George Stuart, HMS Newcastle and HMS Calliope have been disposed of as per Orders. States he has sent a full report to him separately to explain why HMS Perseus has not joined him and his reasons for HMS Charybdis joining his convoy. States that his ship is filled with Naval Officers from the Lakes and Military Officers.

Folios 529-530: enclosure with folios 516-517. Letter dated 3 July 1815 by Admiral Edward Griffith, Akbar, Halifax to Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Bulwark, St Lawrence. Reports ordering HMS Arab to join HMS Bulwark for the purpose of transporting the Captains and Officers from the late ships HMS Levant, HMS Cyane and HMS Success transportation back to England. Orders him to take a proportion of these men on board his ships and distribute the remainder amongst the ships under his command. He is then to direct Captain Henry Jane, HMS Arab to return to Halifax and also HMS Perseus.

Folio 531: enclosure with folios 516-517. Report dated 2 August 1815 by Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Bulwark, to the Admiralty. Defect report on HMS Bulwark as at 2 August 1815.

Folios 532-533: enclosure with folios 516-517. Letter dated 11 June 1815 by Admiral Edward Griffith, Halifax to Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Bulwark. Reports that HMS Leander, HMS Accasta and HMS Perseus have been sent to Quebec, with HMS Bulwark required to reinforce the convoy. When the ships sail from Quebec they are to be in two divisions. Orders him to put to sea and to proceed to the St Lawrence River for this purpose and to also take charge of the convoy with Sir George Collier taking charge of the other division upon arrival. Each division should carry as many troops as possible. Outlines the actions he is to take upon arrival depending on where the other key players are. Captain Clephan, HMS Charybdis is to obey any orders he gives him and should eventually return to Halifax.
