Folios 283-284: William Elliott, HMS Crocodile, Quebec. Reports he sailed from St John's, Newfoundland on 1 July 1814 as ordered by Sir Richard Goodwin Keats. Encloses a copy of these Orders. On 5 July 1814 he fell in with an English Brig at the entrance to the Straits of Bellisle and was informed by the Master that HMS Leopard was on shore at Anticosta [Anticosti Island]. The 500 troops of the Royal Scots and her crew were on shore with only 12 days provisions so he sailed to their aid. Arrived on 12 July 1814 to find the ship wrecked and the crew in tents made from her sails. Captain Edward Crofton, HMS Leopard informed him that HMS Dauntless had taken some of the troops on board 11 July 1814. He took the rest of the troops on board along with women and children, many of them with fever, and left the crew with Captain Crofton as he hoped to save the stores. Left the island and on 12 July 1814 met up with HMS Dauntless and took her sloop under his direction and proceeded to Quebec with all the troops. Fell in with HMS ? accompanied by HMS Indian and five transports that were on their way to Anticosta with orders from Captain White, HMS Centaur, to bring the crew and troops of HMS Leopard to Quebec. Reports he arrived in Quebec 18 July 1814 and the troops were landed. He will obtain water and provisions and will sail for the coast of Labrador.
Folios 285-286: enclosure with folios 283-284. Letter dated 30 June 1814 by Sir Richard Godwin Keats, HMS Bellerophon, St John's Newfoundland to William Elliott, HMS Crocodile. Orders him to proceed to the Straits of Bellisle to protect the fisheries there from the Bay of Sain John's in the Gulf of Lawrence to the Isle of Quirfron? and from Sandwich Bay on the Coast of Labrador to Esquemaux Bay. Orders he liaise with HMS Dauntless and they work together. Orders have been given to the Captain of HMS Victorious, employed for the protection of the Davis's Straight's fishing to communicate with him and requests he looks out for him late August to early September with a view to sharing intelligence with Captain Talbot. At the end of the fishing season return to St John's for further orders.
