Description

Folios 240-241: John Ellis, HMS Spitfire, Spithead. Reports his arrival at Spithead and encloses a copy of a log of proceedings. Reports chasing a brig on 25 April 1814 on which he saw an American pendant. Unfortunately due to weather he lost sight of it. He returned to Cape Coast and tried to obtain provisions but was unable to victual the ship for the required length of time. on 3 May 1814 he proceeded to Saint Thomas's as he promised the Masters of some of the Merchant Ship his protection for a convoy in June. He did not proceed to Princess Island and Gabon due to his provisions situation but instead set sail for England. Also encloses a copy of a letter upon leaving to be sent to the next ship of War to arrive at Cape Coast, probably HMS Astrea or HMS Creole.

Folios 242-243: enclosure with folios 240-241. John Ellis , HMS Spithead to all the Captains of HM Ships that may arrive at Cape Coast, 25 April 1804. Provides an intelligence report on the vessels he has been notified sightings of since his arrival. These include the Hawker of Liverpool seeing two frigates and the Catherine provided a report of an American Sloop of War off Cape Palmas, gives a description of the vessel.
