Folios 231-232: George Elliott, Cheltenham. Encloses a letter from William Munro, an American black who was his servant since joining HMS Modeste in India. He requested a discharge when the war broke out as he has family in America. Permission was obtained from Sir Samuel Hood to discharge him from service altogether. However, due to clerical error, he was discharged as an America and is now in prison. Requests he is discharged.
Folios 233-234: enclosure with folios 231-232. Letter dated 1 July 1814 by William Munro, Tothill Fields Prison. Outlines being taken prisoner as an American due to a clerical error, his papers should have stated he was a Captain's Servant not an American. Explains how he met Robert Elliott at John Elliott's lodgings and was instructed to proceed to the hotel, where he borrowed £5 from Mr Miller, before proceeding to the Coach Office. On visiting Somerset House to collect his wages before leaving he was arrested. Repots that he is to be marched to Chatham to be put on board a Military Prison Ship.
