Folios 450-451: Farmery Predam Epworth, HMS Nyaden in the Tagus. On return from ten weeks cruise only on return to the Tagus received Admiralty letter of 18 November enclosing a letter from William Smith, now on the Myrtle, complaining about his treatment on the Nyaden. Mr Smith offered himself as a volunteer at Portsmouth in July 1811 as a servant. Obtained a reference from Mr Blagrove of Ankerwyke House, who had previously employed him but had"turned him away" for drunkenness and being unclean. Had hoped discipline would help him and his violin playing would be useful. Having given him several opportunities nothing changed and thought his eccentricity bordered on derangement. He asked to be discharged, told him did not have powers to do so but as soon as could find ship which would take him as a servant he could be transferred but he would need to correct his habits. Captain Sneyd of HMS Myrtle, at this port, agreed to take him. Returns letter.
