Description

Folios 413-414: George Eyre, HMS Magnificent, Cawsand. Confirms arrival at Cawsand Bay and encloses copy of Orders from Sir Edward Pellew. Left Gibraltar on 10 January in company with HMS Temeraire. As no trade requiring their convoy made good progress. On 25 December were relieved by the York and sailed from Valencia. At that time everything seemed normal and there was no reason to think the disastrous events which occurred on following day would happen. Commodore Penrose having received an account of them from General Roche [?] at Alicante, which he assumes he will have transmitted to the Admiralty.

Has on board seaman, John Thompson, formerly of the Montagu and who served in the Marquis of Sligo's vessel, before put on the Magnificent at Malta. He has not undergone any trial.

Folios 415-416: enclosure with folios 413-414. Copy of Order of Edward Pellew, HMS Caledonia, Port Mahon dated 14 December 1811. Acknowledges receipt of Captain Eyre's letters of 20 and 27 December stating proceedings off Valencia which do not appear very flattering to the Spaniards. Confirms his approval of measures taken by Captain Eyre. The Admiralty having directed that the Magnificent should sail for England will send the York to relieve him. He is then to proceed to Gibraltar and take charge of any trade homeward bound. Proceed to Plymouth and report arrival to the Admiralty and await their further instructions. Expresses his regret on losing Captain Eyre's valuable service on the station and [?] whilst under my command.
