Folios 402-403: Charles Ekins, Stonehouse. Replies to Admiralty letter of 20 December with regard to character of John Latham, late Seaman on HMS Defence. States that he deserted on 13 April 1810 at Deal. No cause could be assigned to the desertion as his conduct both before and after the Court Martial was always exemplary, nor anything to discredit his testimony. Chaplain and Captain of Royal Marines went to the trial intending to serve the prisoner but found it impossible.
