Folios 400-401: John Edgcumbe, Portsmouth. Replying to Admiralty letter of 20 December states that his servant George Shapcott entered the service as a boy in 1804. When Captain Edgcumbe joined the Psyche in 1808 Mr Shapcott was rated Ordinary. He later became Able Seaman, then Coxswain, from steering his boat and latterly Captain's Steward, being discharged into the Caroline by Admiral's order at Batavia. Assumes that as Captain Cole knew him as his servant and supposing he would be discharged with him on arrival in England, and only seeing him attending him, conceived he was only entitled to be called Landsman.
