Folios 391-392: John Edgcumbe, HMS Caroline, Spithead. Confirms that he was invalided on 29 August 1811 and superceded in command of HMS Psyche on 31 August. Encloses Admiral's Order for him to be"surveyed" together with the report and Surgeon's letter with regard to his general health. In addition to liver problems has stricture in the urethra, which is nearly cured due to change of climate. Laments that the latter will prevent him making an early application for active employment. As full pay ceased on 31 August requests that order may be made for half pay to commence from that date. His present address is General Post Office, Portsmouth.
Folios 393-394: enclosure with folios 391-393. Thomas Jackson, Acting Surgeon, HMS Psyche off Batavia Roads letter to Captain John Edgcumbe dated 28 August 1811. As a result of your very severe attack of hepatitis and general bad state of health highly recommends return to England as of the opinion health would not improve in India. Believes that if had command of ship going to Europe, the wet and cold weather, would result in stricture in the urethra to be very distressing.
Folios 395-396: enclosure with folios 391-393, folios 393-395. Order of Rt. Hon. Robert Stopford, Rear Admiral of the Red, HMS Scipion, Batavia Roads dated 29 August 1811 to Captains Cole, Elliot and Johnstone of HMS Caroline, Modeste and Scipion. Captain John Edgcumbe, Captain of HMS Psyche having transmitted a letter from the ship's Surgeon stating that Captain Edgcumbe is suffering from a severe attack of hepatitis and suffering from a general bad state of health. Believes his health cannot be restored in India and he should return to England and requests a"survey" of him is carried out. They are therefore ordered on board the Psyche taking with them their Surgeons and to examine the state of Health of Captain Edgcumbe and report back to him.
Folio 396: enclosure with folios 391-393, folios 393-395 and folios 395-396. Document pursuant to the Order from the Hon. Robert Stopford, Rear Admiral of the Red. States that the undersigned - Captain Cole, HMS Caroline, Captain Elliot, HMS Modeste and Captain Johnstone of HMS Scipion - with their respective Surgeons have examined the state of health of Captain John Edgcumbe of HMS Psyche and find that repeated attacks of a liver ailment concluded that a change to a cold climate absolutely necessary for recovery of his health and have accordingly invalided him. Document dated 29 August 1811.
