Folios 186-187: Charles Ekins, HMS Defence off Flushing. Gives a Statement of Service of Richard Ruby, now Boatswain of HMS Defence. Has been in HM Navy service since 1770, been a Boatswain for upwards of 19 years. He is 61 years and troubled with rheumatism and deafness and is from general infirmity less able, than willing, to continue in active employment. Requests their Lordships take the circumstances of his case into consideration and apply such relief as they think proper. Mr Ruby would prefer a ship in Ordinary to superannuation.
Richard Ruby has been in His Majesty's service since 1770 and Boatswain as follows:
HMS Rattlesnake from 31 January 1791 to 30 June 1791
HMS Calypso from 1 July 1791 to 10 December 1797
HMS Zebra from 11 December 1971 to 15 April 1800
HMS Prevoyante from 17 April 1800 to 29 July 181
HMS Vulture from 30 July 1801 to 16 September 1803
HMS Resolue from 17 September 1863 to 24 August 1808
HMS Dartmouth from 25 August 1808 to 21 June 1810
HMS Defence from 22 June 1810 to 28 August 1810
He was in 13 Actions in the Appollo Frigate in the American War. Wounded in the Prevoyante 28 July 1800 in action with a Danish frigate. Forehead and deprived of hearing on the left side. Was likewise in several Actions, last war, but never materially wounded. He has a wife and one young child.
