Description

Folios 139-140: Charles Ekins, HMS Defence, Downs. Encloses copy of letter dated 28 October 1809 to Vice Admiral Sir James Saumarcy with its enclosures. As not heard result of the application believe it is his duty to put the same before the Admiralty.

Folios 141-142: enclosure with folios 139-140. Letter from Captain Charles Ekins, HMS Defence, Carlserone to Vice Admiral Sir James Saumarcy dated 28 October 1809. Encloses list of Officers, Seamen and Royal Marines who following his Order, copy enclosed, and Sir James's Order of 2 August 1808 succeeded in completely attaining the objectives. Refers to drafts made of the anchorage by J. Curphy [?] Master of the Defence and delivered to Captain G. Hope which gave a decided advantage over the enemy preventing supplies coming round Porkala Point. Requests consideration be given to the persons listed being entitled to certain allowances for working on shore. Requests he transmits this to the Admiralty for their approval, as such payments are customary in these circumstances.

Folio 143: enclosure with folios 139-140. List of Officers, Seaman and Marines belonging to HMS Defence and Bellerophon stationed at Fort Saumarez, Traskon Island, Gulf of Finland between 18 August 1809 and 21 September 1809. Lists 115 names with ranks.

Folios 144-145: enclosure with folios 139-140. Order given by Charles Ekins, Captain HMS Defence in Makilota Bay to Captain Anthony Stransham, Royal Marines of HMS Ship Defence hereby appointed Captain Commandant of Fort Saumarez on Island of Traskon, in Gulf of Finland dated 18 August 1809. Order to prevent or intercept the gun vessels and convoys of the enemy passing Porkala Point carrying relief to the army in Sweden. To cause a Battery to be erected, to be called Fort Saumarez, on the north end of the Island of Traskon. To garrison this Fort with not less than 100 men to be governed by a Captain Commandant. To go on shore and erect such Fort and take command as Captain Commandant. All Officers and other subordinates to you to conduct themselves with all due respect and obedience.
