Folios 262-263: Joseph Edmonds, HMS Pallas, The Downs. Vice Admiral Graeme appointed Mr John Kirtley as Acting Lieutenant on HMS Pallas. He has been the only Lieutenant on board for the 7 days coming down from The Nore. His conduct and seamanship leads Captain Edmonds to recommend him. Therefore requests confirmation that he may continue as Lieutenant on HMS Pallas.
Folios 264-265: enclosure with folios 262-263. Letter dated 12 January 1800 by John Kirtley, HMS Pallas, the Downs, to the Admiralty. Reports that he has passed the examination to be a Lieutenant, and is presently Acting as such on board HMS Pallas by order of Admiral Graeme. Encloses a testimonial.
Folio 266: enclosure with folios 262-263. Letter dated 7 November 1799 by Solomon Ferris, HMS Inflexible, Chatham. Record of Mr John Kirtley's service on HMS Inflexible, under command of Solomon Ferris, from 2 February 1793 to 7 November 1799. Ranks listed from Able Seaman to Master's Mate, with dates. Confirms he has always behaved diligently, obediently and with sobriety.
