Folios 248-249: William Edge, Walton, Ipswich. Reports that he has, as ordered, visited the different Signal Posts within his district as follows; Gunton, Replingland, Eastend, Beacon Hill, Aldborough, Orford, Further Warren, and Felixstowe. The Post at Aldborough is supplied with empty tar barrels which Lieutenant Crawley has applied for, and two other Posts with poles to raise blue lights to be seen by neighbouring Posts. Some trees will be removed near Orford. They will all be ready to make night signals. The distance between Further Warren and Orford Posts is too far and there is generally a mist at night rising from the marshes which will prevent their seeing either a fire or the blue light. He mentions a new invention of a pistol being fitted in a speaking trumpet, that will, he is told, make a report equal to a 12-pounder which is at Woolwich Warren and might be of great utility when the fires cannot be seen. Also mentions the great use a night glass might be, if only at every intermediate post.
