Description

Folios 588-589: George William Hughes D'Aeth [Daeth], HMS Bucephalus, Spithead. His ship and HMS Thistle have arrived at anchorage from the Gulf of Mexico. He sailed from Dauphin Island on 8 April [1815] with the Enil Moira, Ocean and Woodman transports, the Samuel and Jane Hospital ship and the Agamemnon horse ship, conveying the 43rd regiment, the rear of the army employed in Louisiana. They touched at Havannah on 23 [April 1815] to complete their water. The Ocean and the Woodman parted company in a strong wind [position given] and the Samuel and Jane in a hard gale off the Western Islands. The 2 former vessels must have done so by intention or neglect as they ran ahead during the night when the weather was sufficiently clear for them to have kept sight of his ship.

Folio 590: enclosure with folios 588-589. Return of the sick and wounded of HMS Bucephalus between 22 April and 30 May 1815. Assistant Surgeon Watson Scales appointed by the Transport Board. J Steward (sp?), Surgeon remarks approved by Captain George William Hughes D'Aeth [Daeth], [..] men are objects for invaliding as they are debilitated from repeated attacks of disease. The ship's company is at present pretty healthy and those on the list recovering but from the length of time they have been on salt provisions and hard duty on the coast of America their constitutions are much impaired so that an ample supply of fresh beef and vegetables is absolutely necessary for the restoration of their health.

Folios 591-592: enclosure with folios 588-589. Order dated 3 April 1815 from Pulteney Malcom, Rear Admiral of the White, given on board HMS Royal Oak off Mobile Bay, to George William Hughes D'Aeth [Daeth], HMS Bucephalus. Directs him as soon as the supplies from New Orleans are received to take the transports under his convoy with the 43rd Regiment on board and proceed to Spithead. if he is unable to procure sufficient provisions to carry them to England he is to call in at Havannah to complete his provisions. He is to receive on board Lieutenant Colonel Burgoyne, Commanding the Royal Engineers, Lieutenant Colonel Stovier (sp?), Deputy Adjutant General, Captain Wood, Deputy Assistant Adjutant General, Major Forrest, Assistant Quarter Master General, William Wanyss (sp?), Deputy Commissary general and Brigadier Major Shaw.
