Description

Folios 580-581: Man [Mann] Dobson, Regulating Captain, Bristol. he is enclosing the case of Lewis Samuel, Mate of the friends sloop as stated by Lieutenant Pitman, and an affidavit of John Jenkins [not now enclosed] Master, as to Lewis Samuel being Mate. He believes Lewis Samuel is the Mate, he is just out of his apprenticeship and the former mate was discharged to make room for the young man. Asks for directions regarding him and any other men who are Mates under 21 years of age.

Folio 582: enclosure with folios 580-581. Letter dated 29 may 1815 from Lieutenant William Pitman, Bristol, to Captain Man Dobson, Regulating Officer, Bristol. When he boarded the Friends sloop, Master John Jenkins, he found Lewis Samuel, aged 18 and a half years, physical description given, born in Swansea, 5 years at sea, rated ordinary, doing the duty of Mate. it appears by the affidavit that he was only 18 years old so he ordered him to the Rendezvous as he had always understood that no man can be Mate under the age of 21 years. He was sent on board HMS Enchantress as fit for the navy.
