Description

Folios 561-562: Man [Mann] Dobson, Regulating Captain, Bristol. He is enclosing the case of James George as stated by Lieutenant Rubidge, also the Master's affidavit [not now enclosed] and a paper said to be the certificate of registry of the young man [not now enclosed] signed by John Collins Minister. The Master, Samuel Bevan, did not apply to him for the discharge of James George which would have given an opportunity to investigate the business.. The certificate of registry appears to be a fraud. the young man says he was only 19 at the time the Master made the affidavit.

Folios 563-564: enclosure with folios 561-562. Letter dated 21 May 1815 from Lieutenant R N Rubidge, Pill, to Francis Hancorne, Swansea. He has shown his letter to Captain Man Dobson, Regulating Officer, who says that noone appeared before him on behalf of James George.

Folios 565-566: enclosure with folios 561-562. Letter dated 23 May 1815 from Francis Hancorne, Swansea, to J W Croker, Admiralty Office, London. The Master of his brig the Eloise sent him a letter saying that on 10 [May 1815] on her arrival from Waterford to Bristol, Lieutenant Rubidge of Pill impressed the Mate supposing him to be under age. He sent to his father who is under[..] to Lady Mary Talbot at Penrice Castle for a certificate of his age which he received from the rector of the parish of Penrice. From his christening it appears to have been 21 last December. He immediately sent this to Lieutenant Rubidge as the Mater had told him such a certificate would clear the Mate which he assumed had been done. This morning he received a letter from Lieutenant Rubidge. He did not know that his personal application was required thinking the certificate was sufficient. The Mate's name is James George and the Master is Samuel Bevan.

Folio 567: enclosure with folios 561-562. Letter dated 26 May 1815 from Lieutenant R N Rubidge, Pill, to Captain Man Dobson, Bristol. James George, age uncertain, physical description give, born in the parish of Nicolaston, Glamorganshire, at sea 3 years 4 months, was impressed from the Eliza brig of Swansea on the evening of 11 [May 1815]. He produced an affidavit as Mate, but the Master said he could not sear that he was 20, though the document said him to be 22. He has further proof from a person called Delatoire who arrived last evening from Swansea. he said in the presence of himself and Midshipmen that he had heard Francis Hancorne the owner say to Samuel Bevan the Master on 24 [May 1815] that he was a damned fool for not putting down the lad's proper age, which is 19.
