Folios 554-555: Man [Mann] Dobson, Regulating Captain, Bristol. Since his letter of 15 [May 1815] regarding George (not Thomas) Trench, Carpenter of the Brothers, he has received from her Master, Mr McNair, a letter to George Trench from Alexander Simpson, with an affidavit and a certificate from 3 people concerning the time the man had been at sea, which he encloses. All these people speak of the time George Trench has been upon the sea as from his own account he first went to sea in July 1811 in the Helen, on a voyage to Pictowin in America and afterwards made a voyage to Jamaica in the Aimwell, and has been Carpenter of the Brothers since 13 May 1814.
Folios 556-557: enclosure with folios 554-555. Letter dated 17 May 1815 from Alexander Simpson, a wellwisher, Greenock, to George Trench, Carpenter on board the Brothers of Greenock, care of Mr William Black Boy Tavern, Mary Street, Bristol. He is surprised to hear that he has been impressed in Bristol as he had an affidavit that he was Carpenter on the Brothers employed in the foreign trade and not having arrived at his destination and as he has not yet been at sea 2 years. He has written to Archibald Swinton, Writer to the Signet at Edinburgh and today he replied asking if he has been released. Asks what the Regulating Captain's intention is as he has never belonged to a Naval ship. Affidavit sworn at Greenock 17 May 1815 before Nathan Wilson, J. P.. Alexander Simpson came before him and swore that George Trench, carpenter of the Brothers has not been more than 19 and a half months at sea and does not belong to any of His Majesty's ships of war nor has he deserted from any of them.
Folio 558: enclosure with folios 554-555. Certificate dated 13ay 1815 from James Borrowman, Carpenter,James Guild, Smith and farrier, Thomas French, Nurseryman and seedsman. The bearer, George French, Carpenter on board the Brothers of Greenock, has been 19 and a half months as Carpenter in different ships at sea before 23 April last.
