Folios 202-203: Man Dobson, Regulating Officer, Bristol. States the case of William Blake, said to be Master of the Friends. He inform that from the first he had no doubt that John [Luverthy?] was the real Master of the Friends, as he was the first Master on the Register of the Vessel. William Blake could therefore only be assigned Master by the Custom House Officers for the purpose of protecting him from the Impress, which is a practice very common. He observes that it is to be lamented that Mr [Methurn?], from his official situation and the Officers of the Customs at Barnstable should persist in their endeavours to keep such a Seaman as Blake from the Service. Indeed there was another assigned Master serving on board the Friends at the time William Blake was Impressed, John [Luverthy?] Junior, who Lieutenant William Pitman would have impressed had he been fit for the Kings Service.
