Description

Folios 542-543: Nevinson de Coursey HMS Mutine sloop, Falmouth. Replying to Mr Barrow’s letter 12th about the Friends merchant brig says the Carpenter was impressed for not having a regular affidavit but was discharged on the 12th when he produced as Swedish Protection. The apprentice James Bradshaw, age twenty, confessed to people on the ship he’d been at sea for five years. His indentures were not produced till the day after his impressment and were dated the day before. Both were impressed by Mr Hawksworth, Master. Says he was sixteen men short of complement and has not impressed anyone else since arriving at Falmouth.

Folio 544: enclosed in folios 542-543. Letter dated 10 July 1813 by William Buck Cripps & Co, Liverpool. Sends extract from John Vanhorn, Master, the Friends bound for St Johns, Newfoundland informing him that the Commander of the convoy there to protect them has turned oppressor.

Folio 545: enclosed in folios 542-543. Letter dated 6 July 1813 by John Vauhorn, Master, the Friends brig, Falmouth to William Buck Cripps & Co. Says the Carpenter and an apprentice have been pressed by HMS Mutine. He’s seen Captain N. de Coursey several times and he’s promised to return them. He can never find him. He went to his house and he said he would be onboard at 2pm only they would not let him board when he came alongside.
