Description

Folios 205-206: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Reply to letter dated 13 June 1810 in the cases of:- (1) John Hunt was impressed by Lieutenant [Henry] Raye on 10 June as an Able [Seaman], aged 23, born in Kings Stanton. He said he was Mate of the Three Williams. He was taken on shore at a quarter before 10 o'clock at night. (2) Joseph Maurie [Murrie] was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 6 June 1810 as an ordinary [Seaman], aged 36, born in Portugal. He was taken on the information and at the request of the Portuguese Consul here, who said he was a notorious Crimp, seducing both natives of Portugal as well as British Sailors from their service and shipping in merchant vessels for Pecuniary advantage. Maurie acknowledges he had been married about two years since at the Old Church in this Town to a Mary McDowell (his present wife) Gooding 9who calls himself a merchant to whom the answer is requested to be addressed is a Stop Seller to whom it appears Maurie is much indebted. (3) Samuel Allen as reported in my letter dated 28 May 1810 was impressed by Lieutenant [Henry] Raye on 22 May 1810 as an Ordinary [Seaman], aged 22, born in Yarmouth - Nova Scotia. He said he was Mate of the Hunter. He was taken on shore at twenty minutes past nine o'clock at night. The enclosed leave of absence to the 1 April 1810 was produced with the extension of leave granted by Admiral Young the 7 April 1810, until their Lordships pleasure is known. Your letter dated 31 May 1810 directed him to be discharged if not a British subject. (4) My letter dated 11 June in reply to yours dated 8 June 1810 stated that Nathan [Nathaniel] Bencroft was impressed by Lieutenant [Henry] Raye on 31 May 1810 as an Ordinary [Seaman], aged 23, born in Yarmouth Nova Scotia. he was taken from on board the Hunter in which he came to Liverpool. In consequence of your letter dated 14 June 1810 received today, I have ordered Nathan Bencroft to be discharged. (5) Robert Nutman was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 24 May 1810 as an Able [Seaman], aged 21, born in Yarmouth. He said he was Mate of the Venus of Yarmouth as stated in my letter to you dated 31 May 1810. He was taken on shore in company with a Girl of the Town at half past nine o'clock at night. (6) Lawrence Christian, as stated in my letter dated 24 May 1810 was impressed by Lieutenant [James Hamilton] Clark on 12 May 1810 as an Able [Seaman], aged 24, born in Denmark, when he was impressed a Woman applied to the Lieutenant for his release who positively declared to him that Christian was her Husband. It appears this man was impressed by Lieutenant [Henry] Raye about three years since but then obtained his liberation by bribing the guard. He can speak English tolerably well and therefore his pretences are totally fraudulent and collusive.
