Description

Folios 140-141: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Reply to letter dated 8 June 1810. States that: [1] John Ford alias John Fort was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 3 June 1810 as an Able [Seaman], aged 22, born in Teignmouth. He said he was Mate of the Mary. He was apprehended for his violent behaviour. [2] William Bennett was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 5 June 1810 as an Able [Seaman], aged 28, born in Scotland. He said he was Mate of the Sarah. He was on shore at twenty minutes after 9 o'clock at night. [3] Henry Holt entered with Lieutenant Potter on 24 May 1810 as a Landsman Volunteer, aged 21, born in Rufford. He request to enter fr HMS Peacock having (he said) a relative on board. [4] Nathan Bencroft was impressed by Lieutenant [Henry] Raye on 31 May 1810 as an Ordinary [Seaman], aged 23, born in Yarmouth Nova Scotia. He was taken from th Hunter which vessel he came to Liverpool. [5] James McConnell was impressed by Lieutenant [Henry] Raye on 5 June 181, aged 22, born in Freetown. He said he was Mate of the Maria. Lieutenant [Henry] Raye assures me he was taken on shore after nine o'clock at night. [6] John Dodd was impressed by Lieutenant Potter on 4 June 1810 as an Ordinary [Seaman], aged 28, born I Teignmouth. H said he belonged to the Mary of Teignmouth, he was taken on shore, he had no protection. [7] Owen Jones was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 5 June 1810 as an Able [Seaman], aged 28, born in Scotland. He said he was Mate of the Warren Bulkely. Lieutenant [James Rees] Evans assures me he was present when he was apprehended and that he was first taken on shore at twenty minute past nine o'clock at night. [8] Patrick Burke was impressed by Lieutenant [James Hamilton] Clark on 8 May 1810 as an Ordinary [Seaman], aged 24, born I Galway. He said he was the owner of the Ranger, on which he had placed a Master on the register and he acknowledged he had sailed in her as mate or Hand ever since he bought her. [9] Charles Blakey was apprehended by Lieutenant Evans on 1 June 1810 on account of the violence of his behaviour in throwing stones at the Lieutenant and the Gang when on their duty and his Master being sent for he so far disapproved of the boys conduct that he refused to claim him and said he willingly gave him up to the service. [10] The Boy expressed so great reluctance to return to his Master that he wished to enter for the service he was therefore received as a Sea Boy Volunteer. Having served two years at sea, aged 14, born in Liverpool. The Master has since applied, and said at the intercession of the Parents, he is inclined to wish the Boy may be discharged. [11] John Walker was entered with Lieutenant [Henry] Raye on 28 May as a Boy Volunteer, aged 13, born in Chester. He was rejected by me as being too young but being a very sharp boy and complaining that he had neither Father, Mother or Friend, and expressing a wish to serve at sea, I received him. [12] William McThew does not appear on the Books of the Rendezvous but John McThee appears to have been impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 16 April 1810 as an Able [Seaman], aged 21, born in Ireland. He said he served his time in Worthington, that he had been six years at sea and received seven pounds per month.

Folios 149-150: enclosure with folios 140-141. Coats and Hay , Liverpool. To Admiralty. Dated 12 June 1810. We are pleased to be informed of the order being given for the discharge of Samuel Allen from HMS Princess and now raise the case Nathan Bencroft from the same ship and request his discharge.
