Description

Folios 83-84: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Reply to letter dated 5 June 1810. States William Richards was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 31 May 1810 as Ordinary [Seaman] aged 19, born in Wexford. He said he was the Master of the Thomas and Ann, he was taken on shore at ten o'clock at night. William Sims was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 23 May 1810 as Able [Seaman] aged 29, born in Norfolk. The case of this man is gravely misstated in the application as Lieutenant James Raye Evans assures me he was personally present with his gang and stopped James Cutler the deponent in the street very much in liquor and dressed in jacket and trousers at a quarter before ten o'clock that evening, that he said he was Master of a vessel but had no document to prove it. He struck one of the Midshipman. At about half past ten the same evening the Lieutenant impressed William Sims (in company with a woman) at Salt House Dock. He was sent on board on 24 May 1810 and Cutler was detained until his papers were produced which was not until the evening of 24 May 1810 when he was discharged. Also sent a Certificate produced by a man calling himself John Tuckerman who was impressed by Lieutenant [James Hamilton] Clarke [Clark] on 6 June 1810 as Able [Seaman] aged 30, born in Teignmouth. He came here in the Atlas a Merchant vessel (not a Transport as stated in the Certificate) at 9 Guineas a month, belonging to Mr Fletcher of this port.

Folios 85-86: enclosure with folios 83-84. Letter dated 4 June 1810 by Blakelock & [?], to the Admiralty, for the enclosed affidavit requesting the discharge of William Hull.

Folio 87: enclosure with folios 85-86. Affidavit for the discharge of William Richards, by William Hull, Master of the Brig Thomas and Ann.

Folios 88-89: enclosure with folios 83-84. Letter dated 2 June 1810 by John D Powles, Freemans Court, Cornhill, to the Admiralty. Request the discharge of William Sims.

Folios 90: enclosure with folios 88-89. [Two Affidavits about William Sims]. James Cutler Master of the Brig [?] from Yarmouth appeared before Peter Clarke, Mayor of Liverpool. Also appeared William Woods and John Burn Seamen belonging to the said Brig.

Folio 91: enclosure with folios 83-84. Certificate that John Tuckerman late Carpenter of HMS Achates is discharged from HMS Pompee into a transport for passage to England by order of Admiral Sir Alexander Inglis Cochrane and is to be protected from all impress.
