Description

Folios 68-69: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Reply to letter dated 28 May 1810 states that:- [1] Joseph Matthews was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 18 May 1810, an Able [Seaman], aged 26, born in Bristol. He came here in the Hamilton belonging to Messrs Taylor. His Brother and Sister now live in Sperling Street, Liverpool and he is a native of Cumberland. [2] Rheuben Aaron was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 18 May 1810, as an Ordinary [Seaman], aged 20, born in New London. He produced a Protection dated 1806 as aged 14. Information stated him to be a native of Tortola. [3] William Chase was impressed by Lieutenant [James Hamilton] Clarke as an Able [Seaman], aged 26, born in Newberry Port. He produced a Protection given by Mr Layman with a different height. Also the enclosed paper which he said was given to him by a Lieutenant who took his discharge from him. I suspect him to be a deserter and a British Subject. [4] Richard Maxey was impressed by Lieutenant [James] Rees on 19 March 1810 as an Ordinary [Seaman], aged 19 and said he was an American. He was mate of the Brig Elizabeth of Worhington, he was taken on shore at none o'clock at night, he is a native of Liverpool. His Brother appeared to claim him. His case was stated in my letter dated 5 April 1810. [5] John Harrison was impressed by Lieutenant [James] Rees on 19 February 1810 as an Able [Seaman] aged 26, said to be born in America. He was taken on information of being born in Sligo and married there, he produced the attached Protection, he had a strong Irish accent. His case was stated in my letter dated 14 April 1810. [6] William Larkin was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 20 March 1810 as an Ordinary [Seaman] aged 20, born in Salem. He said he had been resident in Beverly sixteen years, but knew noone or anything about the place, on his way in the boat he acknowledged ha was a native of Ireland. His case was stated in my letter dated 14 April 1810. [7] David Greenlaw was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 31 March 1810 as an Able [Seaman] aged 34, born in Richmond County. This mans case was reported in my letter dated 14 April 1810. I stated he was taken on information of being a native of Ireland and his real name was Francis Long and married in this Tow, his shipmate Thomas Owen who was impressed at the same time and Volunteered the next morning , said he had sailed with [David] Greenlaw in the Loyal Sam of Greenock , his protection was given to a woman calling herself Long, supposed by the Lieutenant, to be his wife. [8] Charles Bray was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 30 April 1810 as an Ordinary [Seaman] aged 22, said he was born in New York, he was taken on information of being married to a woman who lives at No 12 New Hall Street, Liverpool, which she dis not deny. [9] James Stockman was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 2 May 1810 as an Able [Seaman] aged 23, born in Salisbury. He was taken on information that his real name is Davis and that he is married in this town.

Folios 70-71: enclosure with folios 68-69. Letter dated 24 May 1810 by Thomas Wolley, HMS Salvador del Mundo, Hamoaze, to Admiral William Young. Reports on the cases of:- Joseph Matthews, Reuben Aaron, Charles Bray, William Chase, Richard Maxey, John Harrison and William Larkin.

Folio 73: enclosure with folios 68-69. Certificate that William Chase was discharged from HMS Belisle [Belleisle] on 5 November 1807 by order of Admiral Sir Alexander Inglis Cochrane. Signed T T Tucker, First Lieutenant and Commanding Officer.

Folio 74: enclosure with folios 68-69. Protection Certificate for James Stockman. Dated 16 March 1804. Signed by Ralph Cross - Collector of the District of Newburyport,

Folio 75: enclosure with folios 68-69. Certificate that Mr Charles Bray was married in New York on 7 June 1807.

Folio 76: enclosure with folios 68-69. Protection Certificate for Charles Bray. Dated 21 March 1809. Signed by William Williams, Public Notary of the State of New York.

Folio 77: enclosure with folios 68-69. Protection Certificate for David Greenlaw. Dated 11 December 1804. Signed [illegible] Baltimore with a note:- American Consulate, London. March 1810. Examined [illegible] [A?] Dickins, Chancellor.
