Description

Folios 48-49: Thomas Bladen Capel, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Reply to letter dated 28 May 1810. States that John Morgan was impressed by Lieutenant Donald Potter on 23 May 1810, aged 22, born in Wales. He was impressed on shore after nine o'clock but escaped and was followed and retook on board. Daniel Boston was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 17 May 1810 as an Ordinary Seaman, aged 19, born in Liverpool. He said he was an apprentice but acknowledged he had been employed in boats previous to being bound. No Indenture produced. James Conore was impressed by Lieutenant Samuel Clarke on 23 May 1810 as an Ordinary Seaman, aged 21, born in Portaferry [North Ireland]. He said he was Master of the Maria and his name appeared on the register. But it also appeared that Patrick Conore who now sails in the vessel, was before placed on the register as Master, but as he was protected by age he concluded the name was placed to prevent him being impressed. Robert Nutman was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 24 May 1810 as an Able Seaman, aged 21, born in Yarmouth. The affidavit, enclosed, of the two men is false as Lieutenant James Rees Evans assures him this man was taken on shore in company with a Girl of the Town after nine o'clock at night and not from the vessel stated in the affidavit. William Brady was impressed by Lieutenant Henry Raye on 20 May 1810 as an Able Seaman, aged 27, born in Poole. He said he was Mate on the Hope. He was impressed on shore, he escaped and laid hold of a musquet [musket] and threatened to fire. Lieutenant Henry Raye decided to leave him on board that night and returned next morning to take him off the vessel. William Harris was impressed by Lieutenant Evans on 19 May 1810, as an Able Seaman, aged 27, born in Exeter. He said he was Mate on the Winholt . He was taken on shore drunk at ten o'clock at night. This man has been applied for in the name of Harrison and his case was stated in his letter dated 28 May 1810.
