Description

Folios 200-201: William Charlton, Regulating Officer, North Shields. He reports on the case of John Shotton who was impressed by Lieutenant Dathan while travelling on the road to Jarrow. John Shotton attempted to bribe Midshipman James Hunter to allow his escape. He also reports that he has evidence that John Dowsland bribed Midshipman Thomas Wright in order to prevent the impressment of his Mate. Thomas Wright is currently aboard the tender and as a punishment will do general service.

Folio 202-203: enclosed with folios 200-201. Letter dated 30 March 1810 by Mr. Wharton, Treasury. He writes to John Barrow at the Admiralty to ask for the discharge of John Shotton as he is the Mate of the Anatolia.

Folio 204: enclosed with folios 200-201. Joseph Bulmer, J.P., South Shields. An official form certifying that William Anderson of South Shields affirms that John Shotton is the Chief Mate of the Anatolia.

Folios 205-206: enclosed with folios 200-201. Richard Fairles, South Shields. He sends the affidavit regarding John Shotton to William Charlton.

Folio 207: enclosed with folios 200-201. Richard Fairles, South Shields. He forwards a letter dated 2 April 1810 from John Dowsland, Master, the Elizabeth of Scarborough who claims that Thomas Wright, Impress Officer, North Shields, took a bribe from him so that his Mate was not taken.
