Folios 636-637: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Encloses a Certificate of Discharge produced by a man calling himself Hugh Stevens, aged 24, who was imprest by Lieutenant Evans. He said he was born in Philadelphia. and has a Protection dated Philadelphia 1 April 1804. He said he remained in America for six months and then went to London on the ship Rebecca of Philadelphia before sailing for Martinique on 16 or 17 November 1809. He sailed back to Philadelphia in December 1809 but was taken by two Privateers and carried into St Johns. Due to his inconsistencies in his account he took him on board HMS Princess. Awaits direction on detention or liberation.
Folio 638: enclosure with folios 636-637 and affixed to folio 637. Protection certificate for Hugh Stevens dated 16 February 1810 at which time he was discharged per Order of the Admiralty because he was an American. Covers the period 14 December 1807 to 16 February 1810.
