Description

Folios 626-627: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Response to a request to state the case of eleven impressed men. John Horseman, [John Horsman] aged 19, was imprest by Lieutenant Evans on 21 February 1810. He arrived from the Western Islands in the Barshaw and the Mate on board said he was a native of Mevagissy in Cornwall. Thomas Nelson, aged 22, said he was born in Boston. He arrived in the Frazer from America. The cook on the vessel said he was a native of Poole in Dorset. Alexander Wilding, [Alexander Welden] aged 34, was impressed on the 26 February 1810 by Lieutenant James Rees. When imprest he acknowledged he was a deserter from His Majesty's Service in Canton and had since obtained this protection. William Tennant, aged 20, was imprest by Lieutenant Evans on 26 February 1810. He said he was born in America and produced a Protection saying he was aged 20 in 1804. He went to Jamaica and back in the Janet Ann of Liverpool. The Master of this vessel said he was a native of Jamaica. John Height, aged 27, was imprest by Lieutenant Evans on the 19 February 1810. He said he was born in New Brunswick and produced a discharge certificate for John Slate [John Sleight] from on board HMS Blonde dated 8 December 1806. He arrived in the Glenmore from Havanna and he told an officer on board he was born at Lymington and with the American Protection he had got cleared from the service twice. Samuel Grimes, aged 35, was imprest by Lieutenant James Rees on 22 February 1810. He was imprest for having knocked down the Midshipman when on duty and rescued an imprest seaman named Holland from the Press Gang. First said he was born in New York but later said he was an Irishman. John Morse, aged 23, was imprest by Lieutenant James Rees on 22 February 1810 and said he was born in New York. His mates on board said that in America he always passed for an Englishman. James Taylor, aged 26, was imprest by Lieutenant Evans on 23 February 1810. He said he was born in Essex County and he was in Calcutta in 1808 at the time the Protection he produced is dated. He is a native of Whitehaven. Joseph Francis, aged 20, was imprest by Lieutenant James Rees on 19 January 1810. He came here in the Britannia Cheese Ship at £4 10s per month. He did not have a Protection Certificate nor did he claim any privilege as an American. Jeremiah Millir, aged 20, was imprest by Lieutenant James Rees on 25 January 1810. He said he was born in Baltimore and produced a Protection Certificate for Jeremiah Millir but confessed this did not belong to him. He said he was born in Bordeaux and that his french name was Jack Trimolet. No doubt he is a British seaman. Finally, Peter Ribble, aged 28, was imprest by Lieutenant Evans and said he was born in Philadelphia. He came here in the Manhatten from Honduras. He acknowledged he's been four years at sea, his landlady said he was a shipwright and was a native who had served in North Shields.

Folio 629: enclosure with folios 626-627. American Protection Certificate issued by the District of Baltimore for John Horsman [Horseman] dated 8 December 1809 and signed by John Bruce, Deputy Collector.

Folio 630: enclosure with folios 626-627. American Protection Certificate issued by the District of New York for James Taylor, dated 8 October 1808 and signed by David Gelston, Collector.

Folio 631: enclosure with folios 626-627. American Protection Certificate issued by the District of New York for John Sleight [John Slate], dated 10 December 1803 and signed by David Gelston, Collector.

Folio 632: enclosure with folios 626-627. American Protection Certificate issued by the District of New York for John Morse, dated 21 January 1807 and signed by David Gelston, Collector. Endorsed by the American Consulate and Agency London on 23 July 1807 and signed by William Lysman. Consul and Agent of the United States of Protecting Seamen.

Folio 634: enclosure with folios 626-627. American Protection Certificate issued by the District of Bath for Thomas Nelson, dated 18 October 1805 and signed by Dudley B Hobart, Collector.

Folio 635: enclosure with folios 626-627.American Protection Certificate issued by the District of New York for Samuel Grimes, dated 8 August 1806 and signed by David Gelston, Collector.
