Folios 617-618: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Response to a request from Admiral Young to state the case of John Coffey. a Landsman substitute who was found to be improperly passed and to respond to complaints made against him. He requests that full names of the men and the nature of their complaints is provided so that the surgeon may guard as much as possible against any imposition in future. Provides a copy of a letter [see folio 619] found on board HMS Princess, which shows what the surgeon has to contend with. States that John Coffey was examined, never declared anything was wrong with him and was paid £36 15s as he was fully qualified for service.
Folio 619: enclosure with folios 617-618. Copy of a letter sent to an impressed man names Bill on board HMS Princess, dated 9 January 1815 by Eliza Stephens. Letter outlining how to feign a rupture to hoodwink the surgeon examining him and telling him to keep this information to himself.
