Description

Folios 535-536: William Cashman, HMS Triton, Waterford. Reports that William Gahon [Gehan], aged 16 or 17, entered service voluntarily on 19 December 1809 at Waterford on board HMS Victoire. He was discharged to HMS Virago on 22 December1809 and sailed on 23 December 1809. His Master applied for him after the vessel had sailed.

Folios 537-538: enclosure with folios 535-536. Thomas and William Martin, New Ross, Wexford, Ireland to the Admiralty, 7 February 1810. Memorial requesting the return of their Apprentice, William Gehan [Gahon] having absconded from their service. They applied for his discharge on finding out he was on HMS Triton but found that he had been put on HMS Virago a few hours before and was sailing to England. They have received a letter from William on board HMS Princes of Orange in the Downs dated 28 January 1810, sating his willingness to return again into his Master's Service. Encloses his Indentures, a certificate from Reverend George Carr, Curate of the town and the letter

Folios 539-540: enclosure with folios 535-536. William Gehan [Gahon], HMS Prince of Orange, The Downs, to Messrs Thomas and William Martin, New Ross, Wexford, Ireland. Asks his Masters to apply to the Admiralty for his discharge, which will not cost them a penny and apologises for being an unworthy Apprentice. States he is presently on the Sick List and the Doctor has advised him that if he has not taken a Bounty, which he has not, then he can be claimed by his Masters.

Folio 541: enclosure with folios 535-536. George Carr, Curate, Parish of St Mary, New Ross. Certifies that William Gehan was an indentured Apprentice of Thomas and William Martin, Shoemakers. Asks for the return of the Indentures free of expense [item not included].
