Description

Folios 286-287: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Response to a request to state the case of 7 men who were imprest. John Thomas, aged 30 and born in Africa, was imprest on 20 January 1810 by Lieutenant James Rees. He had a certificate stating he was an American but had the appearance of a West India Black but insisted he was born in Africa. Edward Vernon, aged 21, was imprest by Lieutenant Evans on 14 January 1810. He said he was Mate of the Success and was taken on shore at 8.20 pm. Henry Gordon Dunn, aged 24, was imprest on 11 January 1810 by Lieutenant Henry Freeman Young Pogson. He produced a Protection Certificate and the date had been altered on it from 1805 to 1807. John Williams, aged 20, was imprest on 26 December 1809 by Lieutenant Henry Freeman Young Pogson. He said he belonged to the Hero Packet but was taken on shore at 8.20 pm. Matthew Perry, aged 38, was imprest on 11 January 1810 by Lieutenant James Rees. He said he was born in Philadelphia but a man who sailed with him in the Burnett from Boston said he was a British subject. William Trueman alias William Heaney, aged 21, was imprest on 8 January 1810 by Lieutenant James Rees. He said he was a native of Ireland but later confessed that his real name was Heaney, son of Patrick Heaney of Warren's Point and a British subject. Peter Kent, aged 19 and born in New Brunswick, was imprest on 22 January 1810 by Lieutenant James Rees. He produced an Indenture but admitted he had been fishing 3 or 4 seasons prior to being bound.

Folios 288-289: enclosure with folios 286-287. William Buck, Cripps & Co, Liverpool to the Admiralty, 23 January 1810. Petition for the discharge of Peter Kent, an indentured apprentice, imprest and nos on board HMS Princess. Outlines the circumstances of his indenture to Bartholomew Coxetter of Saint John and Henry Gilbert of New York and disputes his service in the British Fisheries.

Folios 290-291: enclosure with folios 286-287. Ben Bryan, at John Richardson Esq, Liverpool to the Admiralty, undated. Petition for the release of his steward John Thomas, born an African, resident of America for the last 15 years and having an American Protection.

Folios 292-293: enclosure with folios 286-287. Samuel Richardson, Master of the Success, to the Admiralty, undated. Petition for the discharge of Edward Vernon, Mate on the Success, who has been imprest.

Folios 294-295: enclosure with folios 286-287. James Gerrard, Justice of the Peace, Liverpool to the Admiralty, 16 January 1810. Affidavits by Jane Walton, wife of [Colshert?] Walton, and Alice Conley, wife of Robert Conley. outlining how they know Edward Vernon and the actions they took on his being imprest.

Folios 296-297: enclosure with folios 286-287. Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain. Copy of an Impress Service Notice, Liverpool, dated 25 October 1809 stating that after this date that all Mates found off duty after 8 o'clock at night and rom 1 April to the 25 October at 9 o'clock at night will be imprest and sent on board ship for service in spite of any Protection Certificate they may have.

Folios 298-299: enclosure with folios 286-287. W W Williams, Fisherman, Nevin, Carnarvon, 19 January 1810. Petition for the discharge of his son, John Williams, by providing one substitute to replace him, as he is unable to bear the cost of two substitutes. Outlines how his son came to be on a small coaster trading from Carnarvon to Liverpool and how he and his children are dependant on him.

Folio 303: enclosure with folios 286-287. American Protection Certificate issued by the District and Port of Philadelphia for Matthew Perry, dated 10 December 1807 and signed by John Graff, Deputy Collector.
