Description

Folios 261-262: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Response to a request to state the case of James Melllish [James Mellhuish] on board HMS Lyra. He was imprest on 14 January 1810 on shore at North Shields by Lieutenant Thomas Flinn. He said he belonged to the Burnthorn of North Shields, William Young Master. When he produced an affidavit to this effect, Robert Young disputed his being Master of this ship.

Folios 263-264: enclosure with folios 261-262. Jonah Cockerill, North Shields. Encloses an affidavit on behalf of James Melluish [James Mellish] and asks how many substitutes they will require to obtain his discharge.

Folio 265: enclosure with folios 261-262. Affidavit by Robert Young, Master of the Brig Burnthorn sworn before Jonah Cockerill, North Shields, 17 January 1810. Stated that he did not register himself as Master of this brig in London but intended to do it when he arrived in Newcastle. He appointed James Melluish as his Chief Mate in the River Thames and arrived on the Tyne about the 28 December 1809. James Melluish was impressed on shore at North Shields on 14 January 1810. Confirms he registered as Master on 15 January 1810, there was no intent of fraud in being late registering and he had been the only Master.
